My Keto Story

Where do I start? I was the heavy kid growing up, despite playing sports, year round. There was basketball, baseball, and soccer. You would think a kid that active, would be in some sort of shape. But, really I just played because it’s what my friends were doing. I dreaded every practice, everyday, of every season that wasn’t game day, that running… ugh. So why was I the heavy kid, well I ate, I still eat, idk.. I like food and since I can remember it has been my anxiety crutch.

The summer after my freshman year I stopped playing sports, I went from 180 to 225 in just a matter of about a half a year. I was fortunate that my metabolism was somewhat high and as long as I kind of watched what I ate and worked out, 225 was my base weight, but I could see it creeping up year after year until 240 was my new baseline. By baseline I mean my freak out weight, where I would start to go on spurts of working out and trying to eat right. This helped me maintain weight but not keep off fat or do much for my health. One thing that always helped me was that I was never much of a sweets eater. No, my thing was greasy, salty, carb foods like; pizza, burgers, beer, tacos, nachos, and sandwiches. Yum, I guess you could say a typical American diet.

All of this held my weight somewhat constant but my health was a nagging problem. I sweat at all times, I would turn red, get winded walking up stairs, etc. The one thing I had going for me, was that I worked in restaurant/retail management so I stayed active. But I avoided the dr like it was the plague, despite the health issues and the family past. I mean both of my parents had high blood pressure and my dad passed away of a heart attack at a young age. I just didn’t want to get diagnosed with a health issue and have to start taking medication. It’s not like I did nothing, I would try to eat healthy sometimes, I tried to workout occasionally, I would dabble in natural remedies. I just didn’t have commitment, I didn’t know where to start, so I just lived and let life lead me instead of taking control of my own life.

I was seriously out of control at the start of 2015, I was smoking cigarettes, drinking 2-3 energy drinks a day, drinking quite often, eating bad, and working 6-7 days a week, with undiagnosed sleep apnea, and high blood pressure. I hit an all time high of 265, and I started to freak out, but I didn’t know what to do to help myself, but I had to start somewhere, so I gave up tobacco and energy drinks. Not quite there but hey every journey has a start.

The real start was April 5th, 2017; I had set a new all time high of 270.. yikes!! I had to go to the Dr. for a minor issue, it was nothing but when I got there the nurse took my blood pressure and it was a staggering 210/110, this was concerning. But it was when they went to draw blood and my blood was too thick to actually come out and I was sweating profusely. I felt fine but they brought another Dr. in a specialist to ask me if I was having any chest pains because they feared I was near a stroke or heart attack. She immediately put me on medications to lower my blood pressure and set up an appointment with a cardiologist. They put me on medications, but found out I had another issue my heart was in artifibulation. More medications and a surgery later and my blood pressure was medically under control. So I continued my bad eating habits but I did decide to give up caffeine and I switched to solely drinking water, I was getting there one little goal at a time. But I was never a fan of medications, I just didn’t know what to do and believe me I had tried dieting many times, I was actually more on a continuous diet mixed with a lot of cheat days.

It was in February of 2018 my brother Matt suggested that we start keto, that was where my Keto journey began. a journey that has forever, changed my life, for the positive. The day after the superbowl I gave up alcohol, sugar, prepackaged food, and I have never looked back. It has become my lifestyle and my passion. It was unbelievable really not just how I lost weight, but how good I felt. I felt alive I felt in control, I understand that what I was doing is not perfect not exactly text book keto but it works. Not just for weight but with numerous mental and physical issues.

The more I learn about nutrition and holistic health the more I understand how little i really understood about the human body. I want to help people be their healthiest self, help people become aware of the power that their body truly has, when we use the right power source. Much of our diet is a little like buying that knock off apple charger where the screen is just a little off or the battery feels like it’s going to catch fire. Oh sure I have some days now and then like a new ice cream shop opens in town and they have my favorite flavor of all times!

But like I said my passion is you, it’s helping people succeed, I’ve been there I know the struggle I know the feelings you have inside.

Food is still a major part of my life... I just enjoy better for me foods!
